"Last summer I made a performance with Currende, the choir conducted by Erik Van Nevel, in the context of the commemoration of the Great War, which was so good, what a group of voices can do with feelings and a story is magical."

Guillaume Dufay, Missa Ecce ancilla Domini
Nicolas Gombert composed ten masses, nine of which have been preserved in their entirety. The Missa Tempore Paschali is an early work, which is noticeable in the style. Remarkably, the Kyrie, Gloria and Sanctus are for six voices, the Credo (not sung) for eight voices, and the Agnus Dei for no fewer than twelve voices. A true feat for Currende to bring this with eight singers!
Friday May 31 at 8 p.m. in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges.
The famous Vespro della Beata Vergine dates from 1610, when Monteverdi worked at the court of the Gonzagas in Mantua. It is a prestige work that he dedicated to Pope Paul V. He even personally traveled to Rome to hand it over to the Pope. One can therefore see the Mariavespers as a job application at the papal chapel. That suddenly also explains the wide range of styles and techniques. Monteverdi unfortunately did not get the intended position, but three years later he did receive the post of bandmaster at the San Marco in Venice.
Cipriano de Rore: Le Vergine
The poetry of Francesco Petrarca has inspired many artists through the ages. His sonets and stanzes are so musical and speak very intensely to the imagination. His muse Laura, who in a certain sense has always remained an unattainable love and for which he spent almost all his life in literary ecstasy, has been a constant inspiration to him.

"Polyphony or baroque, it's always a party at Eriks, I know nobody else who can translate things technically in such a way and then make music out of it again."
